ART KETCHUP DAY!

Hello, my amazing artists!
Can you imagine, this school year is almost over and the summer fun is about to start!
This week's homework assignment is to catch up on all of your missing work. Check google classroom and see if any of your assignments marked "missing". Sometimes, the assignment is marked "turned in" but there is no attachment: as you know I can not grade your work if it's not uploaded. Please check both, homework and classwork.
By the way, did you know that June 5th is National Ketchup Day? What a coincidence!:-)

Due:

Found Objects Color Wheel

Hello, my amazing artists!

This week's homework assignment is to recreate a color wheel using household objects.

Directions:

  1. Find items around your house that are the same colors as

the Primary and Secondary colors and if you can the Tertiary colors in the Color Wheel. Toys and school supplies work great!

  2. Arrange the objects on the floor into your own color wheel. Remember how the colors are related and make sure you put them in the correct order!

  3. When you are finished, please take a picture and submit to Google Classroom. I will share your color wheels next class!

I am attaching some of the examples of household objects colors wheel below as well as a color wheel itself, to help you with the correct order!

Here are some examples that I found on the internet. You do not have to draw that many! But try to do your best job drawing the supplies that you have.

Meeting so many of your pets during the zoom classes gave me an idea to create an assignment "My Pet Portrait". You can draw the pet that you own, or a neighbor's pet, or, perhaps, a pet that you would like to have one day. You can also write a little about your pet, like the name and favorite food or a toy.

Assignment

Hello, my amazing artists!
Last week you started adding color to your independent study project. How exciting is that?! Begin with the bigger shapes and backgrounds, coloring them in first. I know it is tempting to start a portrait by drawing eyes, coloring irises and adding eyelashes; however, for this assignment, I encourage you to follow the artistic rules proven to work best.  Address everything on the background, middle ground, and only then add smaller, well-pronounced details. Just recently, we completed the self-portrait painting in class, think about the steps we took and try to apply this knowledge to your current work.
The photo of your work is due next Friday. Please submit your homework via email.
Late work will be graded accordingly.

Assignment

Hello, my amazing artists!
This week I am asking you to think about your chosen artwork and collect necessary materials. Most of the artists used oil paint in their works, but you can successfully substitute oil paint with acrylics, oil pastels, colored pencils or markers. As I mentioned in the class, Ross store often has very affordable small tube sets of acrylic paint for under 10 dollars as well as drawing paper and canvases if you decide to use canvas for your work. I can land you some watercolors, oil pastels, colored pencils, soft pastels, but not the acrylics as they will dry before you can bring them home.
Part two of this week's assignment is to start sketching your work. You may use your sketchbook or a separate piece of paper. Please email me the image of your sketch by 2/21/2020.
Thanks!

Hello, my amazing artists!
Happy 2020!
Did you know that according to the Chinese zodiac, 2020 is the year of the Rat?
The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived at the finish line, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox, becoming first. Quick thinker!
Our first homework assignment of 2020 is to draw a famous rat character (or a mouse).

Hello, my amazing artists!

Next week's homework assignment is to draw a portrait of a friend or a family member! You can sketch a portrait of your friend from observation, or photograph (yearbook is a good source of your classmates' photos). Start with the oval or egg-like shape of the head. Think about what features make your friend's/ family member's face special. Is your friends hair curly or straight? What color are your friend's eyes? So many details to keep in mind!

Hello, my amazing artists!
"Winter Sports" is our homework theme for the next week. Please draw a scene from any winter sport activity or create an elaborate image of your favorite sport's equipment. You can use a regular 2B pencil for this task( use shading, hatching, and cross-hatching) or some color pencils!

Assignment

Hello, my amazing artists!
This week we will be drawing a teacup (or a coffee mug) from observation. As always, we are looking for the biggest shape to identify. In cups and mugs, it is either a cylinder or a sphere. Start by drawing a vertical guideline. As we are trying to convey the 3d form of the object we pay attention to the depth of the teacup-the circular (oval) opening and the base. Remember our classroom discussion and try to avoid a common mistake: oval opening and flat base.
Here's the link for advanced students of step by step instruction.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Assignment

Hello, my amazing artists!
The homework assignment for the next week is to draw a tree leaf from observation. The Fall season gives us an opportunity to draw many beautifully colored tree leaves from observation. So next time you go for a walk, look around, you might just find a leaf waiting to be drawn!
To show the rich colors of the leaf use colored pencils. If you decide to use the favorite pencil of Shakespeare, 2B can be used to shade the leaf, showing a variety of darker and lighter areas. See some examples below!

Assignment

Hello, Artists,
The homework assignment for the next week is to draw fruit from observation.
I am attaching drawings of apples; the shape is spherical and the task is similar to the last week's homework.
When drawing from observation, there is less room for mistake in placing the core shadow, the highlight, the cast shadow. You do not need to invent anything, just draw what you see.
If you have trouble seeing the transition between the mid-tone and the core shadow, try squinting
your eyes. It is helpful to have a strong source of light hitting the upper side of the fruit vs overhead
lighting.
Watch a short video on how to draw an apple from observation here. Try to follow the steps of the artist developing the drawing. Try to see what the artist sees in the image on the left side of the screen.
Don't be afraid to go darker in the areas of the core shadow and the cast shadow!

Hello, Artists,
As a reminder, your homework assignment for the next class is to complete the value scale handout I provided to you in class today. Use a pencil for your assignment and try to get similar level darkness/ lightness on your worksheet.
This handout was designed to help you understand the value range and how to achieve the illusion of depth in your work. We will use this knowledge in our next classroom project.
