Students will meet a scientist from Illumina, a Bay Area company that builds DNA sequencing instruments and arrays. Their expertise is in the area of genomics and they help researchers study infection diseases, apply best breeding and crop growing tactics in agriculture, perform non-invasive prenatal testing, drug testing, as well as perform cancer and rare disease diagnostics.
Hilldale students will be introduced to genomics, a branch of biology dedicated to studying genomes and their structure. The presentation will cover the following:
-what is a genome
-how it works in a living organism
-why it is important to study it
-careers in genomics
Also, if there is enough time, there is a possibility of doing a hands-on activity, like extracting DNA from strawberries or cheek cells!
