Fifth Grader Reflects on a Season of Service

02-13-2026

Fifth graders traveled to Guatemala to perform service.

As February comes to an end, Hilldale School is proud to reflect on a meaningful experience that continues to resonate within our community. Over break, a Hilldale student traveled with his family to Panatzan, Guatemala, to help build a school in a rural town where access to educational resources is limited.

Working alongside local community members and fellow volunteers, Sameer took part in hands-on construction, helping lay the foundation for a school that will provide children in Panatzan with a safe, permanent place to learn. For many families in the region, educational opportunities are scarce, making this project a powerful step toward long-term change.

Beyond the physical work, the experience offered invaluable lessons in empathy, global awareness, and service. Immersed in a new culture, Sameer gained a deeper understanding of gratitude and the role education plays in strengthening communities around the world.

This story reflects the commitment to nurturing compassionate, engaged learners who understand the importance of giving back. As we close out February and look ahead to the months to come, we are reminded that meaningful learning happens not only in the classroom but through service, connection, and shared purpose.
