Within our San Fransisco unit, second graders take a ferry ride to former maximum security prison, Alcatraz. It's a little spooky, walking along the hallway of cells and even into solitary confinement! But we make sure not to leave anyone behind! The audio-tour teaches us about in-mates, escape attempts, and life at "the Rock." Imagining life behind bars causes us to think about the serious consequences that can follow from breaking the law. It also makes us appreciate the daily freedoms we have that we sometimes take for granted.
