      2. If you do not study music outside of school, some of this may be brand new. You'll need to go over this multiple times for it to stick in your brain. Don't fret, just keep at it.

Assignment

6th Graders --

Please do your homework this week. Thank you to Samantha, Kai, Violet and Carmela who were the only students in the entire class who did their homework.

This week at home (due 9/24):

1 -- Read and do the homework due Sept. 4. Be sure your parents read it, too.

2 -- Read and do the homework due Sept. 17.

3 --- Photocopy page 1: Learn the parts of the ukulele
Remember: if you have re-entrant tuning you will be playing the SOL/G on line 2 in the treble clef. If you have linear tuning, you will be playing the low SOL/G below the staff (in the space below the 2nd leger line.
Page 2: Study and play (correctly) the open strings.
Page 3: Clap and say the rhythms for exercises 1-8 using Takadimi.
Play and sing the solfege notes while you play exercises 1-8
If you can play all eight exercises, strum them the way you saw
James does it in the video.
Page 4: Read, play, sing as instructed.
Page 5: Read, learn note values, figure out how to clap and say the takadimi for 1-6.
Play and sing solfege for 1-6.

Another reminder: If you've done 1 and 2 above, you've already printed out your practice calendar and you will be tracking how much you practice. The suggested minimum is 10 minutes on four different days.

Due:

Assignment

Photocopies:
Your classroom teacher has the photocopies for your homework this week. Read through all the pages and do your best to understand what it's all about.

Video to help you with open strings:
First choose your tuning by looking for the bright yellow arrow to the right of the video:
TheUkuleleWay.com is a great online course. James Hill is the creator and he is also the author of the Ukulele in the Classroom curriculum that we will eventually be using. This is a terrific online course --- but you do not need to purchase it. You do need to join the website to look at this video, but it's free to do that. This website is safe and I personally know James -- he was my instructor -- so enjoy the free parts. And, if you want to zoom ahead or play over summer, this is a great and reasonably priced tool.

TUNING:
Please download a free tuning app on a phone and tune regularly. Drop off your instruments in the music room Monday before school so we can spend all our time playing instead of tuning.

PRACTICE
Go here to read and download calendars.
